The Federal Government of Nigeria has designed the N-Power Programme to drastically reduce youth unemployment. The focus is to provide our young graduates and non-graduates with the skills, tools and livelihood to enable them advance from unemployment to employment, entrepreneurship and innovation. The first phase of N-Power will target Nigeria’s critical needs in education, agriculture, technology, creative, construction and artisanal industries. N-Power is also preparing Nigeria for a global outsourcing push where our young Nigerians can export their services to work on global projects that earn Nigeria, foreign exchange.

N-Power Build is an accelerated training and certification (Skills to Job) programme that will engage and train 75,000 young unemployed Nigerians in order to build a new crop of skilled and highly competent workforce of technicians, artisans and service professionals.

1. ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE COURSE

Electrical Installation & Maintenance is focused on developing skills associated with how to install electrical systems and carry out the inspection and testing of single-phase and three-phase domestic installations using the City & Guilds of London framework. This course also covers basic principles of electricity, repairs and planned maintenance to an existing installation. This 3 months intensive training is aimed at equipping the participants with the appropriate skills and competencies to operate and maintain safe working conditions, identify and select quality materials based on their technical properties and practical competencies required for installation and routine maintenance.

At the end of the training, the participants should be able to:

  1. Carry out safe working practices to prevent hazards and proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  2. Understand basic principles of electricity
  3. Identify and select quality materials for specific applications and also describe the technical properties of materials in single and three phase circuits
  4. Take off accurate dimensions from drawings and calculate values and quantities for single and three phase circuits
  5. Set out single and three phase circuits
  6. Install electrical systems; carry out the inspection and testing of single and three phase domestic installations
  7. Diagnose, locate and repair faults within an electrical installation
  8. Safely undertake alterations to an existing installation and conduct planned maintenance procedures
  9. Carry out the maintenance of distribution boards
  10. Carry out the maintenance of Direct-on-line (D.O.L.) motor starters
  11. Earthing point: e.g. earth electrode, terminal provided by electrical supplier (e.g. metallic sheath/ armouring of supply cable), directly to neutral of supply
  12. Prepare cables for termination
  13. Install a three phase radial circuit to an electric motor
  14. Connect an electrical installation to a suitable earthing point and cross bond, all metalwork

2.  MANUAL METAL ARC & GAS WELDING COURSE

Manual Metal Arc (MMA) & Gas Welding is focused on developing welding skills that meet up with the defect acceptance requirement of BS 4872 Part 1 in Steel or Stainless steel using the City & Guilds of London framework. This course deals with the technology and the principles that underpin the fabrication and welding processes as well as the application of this knowledge within a health & safety compliant environment. This 3 months intensive training is aimed at equipping the participants with the appropriate skills and competencies in producing standard welded joints safely using the MMA & Gas welding process.

The following modules will be covered:

  13. Introduction to Metal Inert Gas (MIG)

At the end of the training, the participants should be able to:

  1. Draw and interpret drawing
  2. Use mechanical measuring instrument
  3. Carry-out bench work
  4. Understand basic principles, terminologies and symbols of welding
  5. Understand the effects of welding
  6. Know how to identify common metals used in fabrication and determine forming allowances
  7. Know safe working practices and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) associated with Welding
  8. Prepare MMA, gas equipment and materials for welding
  9. Produce standard welded joints safely using MMA & gas welding
  10. Visually check welds for defects

3. PLUMBING INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

This course is designed to provide participants with practical knowledge and competencies in fixing of pipes, drain fittings, valves, valve assemblies and devices installed in a building for the distribution of water for drinking, heating, washing, and the removal of waterborne wastes. This 3 months intensive training is aimed at equipping the participants with the appropriate skills and competencies to operate and maintain safe working conditions, identify and select quality materials based on their technical properties and practical competencies required for installing, repairing and maintaining pipes, fixtures and other plumbing tools used for water distribution and waste disposal in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. Proper use and maintenance of plumbing tools & equipment and care in the handling of the tools is emphasized.

At end of this programme, participants should be able to:

  1. Maintain safe working conditions and to adopt safe procedures for themselves and others
  2. Identify and select materials for specific applications based on their technical properties
  3. Describe the technical properties of the main types of materials in use
  4. Identify environmental effects and benefits of plumbing materials and water treatment processes
  5. Take off dimensions from drawings of below ground drainage pipework
  6. Calculate quantities of excavations and bedding to assist in preparing, costing and estimating set out drainage systems
  7. Produce working drawings
  8. Apply basic tool skills to set out, fabricate, install, test and commission domestic:
  • Water pipework
  • Gas pipework
  • Sanitation and Drainage pipework
  • Drain water gutters and down-pipes
  1. Learn communication skills in the work place
  2. Use information technology in the work place
  3. Apply basic tool skills to carry out the alteration, repair and planned maintenance of existing system

4. FURNITURE

Furniture is a vocationally oriented programme intended to teach trainees the skills and knowledge necessary to begin a successful career as a cabinet or furniture-maker. The trainees will complete a series of projects of increasing complexity and detail, which will impart not only the techniques required to cut and process panels and solid stock, produce accurate joinery and assemble finished pieces, but also the skills required to do so in an efficient and cost effective manner.  They will learn to work independently and also as part of a highly skilled team. Emphasis will be on safety, accuracy and efficiency in the techniques of contemporary woodworking.

  3. Identify environmental effects and benefits of timber based materials and processes
  4. Take off dimensions from drawings of circular, semicircular and triangular structures/products
  5. Calculate quantities to assist in preparing, costing and estimating
  6. Set out components to form products
  7. Produce working drawings of complex structures and products
  8. Set up, change tooling and operate woodworking machinery
  9. Set up, change tooling and operate portable powered hand tools
  10. Set out, manufacture and assemble components, frames and products
  11. Applying tool skills to carry out the alteration, repair and restoration of existing buildings

5. BLOCK-LAYING & MASONRY 

Block Laying is focused on equipping the participants with the skills and knowledge to work in the building and construction of block making & masonry trade. The participants will learn how to make blocks, lay and bond bricks and similar building blocks and how to construct ornamental panels, feature walls, arches and columns. The trainee will also learn how to lay bricks for domestic, commercial and public buildings, as well as how to prepare and maintain masonry work. They will learn about the common materials of masonry construction which are bricks, stones, marble, granite, travertine, limestonecast stoneconcrete block, and tile. In addition, they will be able to read and understand design drawings and structural details to understand clearly the types of blocks to be used, their bonding patterns, reinforcing and grouting details and the relationship between the concrete masonry and other elements of the structure in hand.

At the end of the training, the participant should be able to:

  1. Apply occupational health and safety requirements
  2. Handle bricklaying materials and use bricklaying tools and equipment
  3. Read and interpret plans and specifications
  4. Set out sites and use leveling equipment
  5. Lay brickwork for a brick veneer home and a cavity brick home
  6. Lay block work, masonry walls and corners, multi-thickness walls and piers and set out footings
  7. Lay paving
  8. Construct curved walls and fancy archways
  9. Complete minor concrete works
  10. Install reinforcement material into concrete structures, brick structures and block structures
  11. Construct concrete form work for slabs on ground and to ramps and steps

6. REFRIGERATION and AIR-CONDITIONING

The Refrigeration and Air-conditioning training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and practical competencies of refrigeration, air-conditioning, refrigerants, their properties and associated controls. The importance of this training to construction and building maintenance industries cannot be over emphasized. This 3 months intensive training is aimed at equipping participants with the appropriate skills and competencies in the usage of manuals, drawings, hand tools, test instruments in troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing and safety regulations in industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning. The N-Build programme will provide participants with practical hands-on experience in servicing and maintenance of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.

At the end of this training participants should have the knowledge and practical understanding of:

  1. The principles of refrigeration process
  2. Safety rules and regulations in the use of industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning
  3. The principle components of refrigeration systems, heat/cool units and air conditioning
  4. Selection and proper use of hand tools and test instruments for troubleshooting different problems in refrigeration and air-conditioning
  5. The usage of appropriate refrigerant for charging air-conditioners and refrigerators
  6. Troubleshooting procedures and implementation solutions with the aid of installation manuals/drawings.
  7. Operational/instructional manuals for troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment
  8. Safety rules and regulations in the use of industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning
  9. The electrical and automatic controls used in all aspects of the refrigeration and air conditioning industry
  10. Assembling, installing or over hauling all components

    It will be a good program if the Federal Government can achieve it.
    Moreso the government should ensure that all necessary equipment are provide for the program.The empowerment should start immediately so that there will not be idle hand which means all hands will be on desk.
