Accepting Your Weakness In Order To Succeed

Many people tend to be reluctant to admit any kind of weakness. They do their best to show off their strengths to the people around them. I know this because I am guilty too. However, the fact still remains-everyone has a weakness. Now, the ability to fully accept and deal with your weaknesses is a very essential to achieving success in life. On the other hand, pretending that they don’t exist can have very detrimental effects.

Here are some of the reasons why you should accept your weaknesses:

There is no growth without knowledge

You need to come to the realization that it is almost impossible to achieve growth in life if we are too strong to accept our weaknesses. Acknowledging your weaknesses does not mean accepting that you are a failure and that you’ll always be in the same position for the rest of your life. No! It simply means you are strong enough to admit you need improvement. I mean, the only way you can improve at anything in your life is by first being aware of what needs to be improved. You will never be able to change what you cannot accept. This is why at most job interviews, you’ll be asked to mention your weaknesses. They want to know the areas where you are not strong and the steps you are taking to improve.

You’ll be on the look out for complementary skills

“A tree cannot make a forest”, “No man is an Island”, there are endless sayings that only goes to show that no one can do everything. Accepting your weaknesses allows you to be on the lookout for people who have the skills you lack. Successful teams consist of people with diverse abilities. Where one team member falls short, there is someone else who can fill the gap. When you make it a habit to surround yourself with people who compliment you, you are more likely to succeed in life.

Makes you more compassionate

When you have come to terms with your weaknesses, you tend to understand the failings of other people; the pain of living with them. As a result, you’ll be able to sympathize with the weaknesses of others. For instance, I had the tendency to be impatient; when I realized that is was a weakness and sort out way to be better, I was able to empathize with people who have the same weakness. Likewise, if you have had the fear of speaking in public, you will be able to understand an employee or colleague that is hesitant to make a presentation. Therefore, accepting your own weaknesses can go a long way in improving your relationships with your employees, colleagues, friends and family.

Allows You to Choose your Relationships

Before becoming attached to anyone; be it business or romantic relationship with anyone, it is very important to come to terms with yourself. You need to accept your weaknesses and be open with your partner about them. Failing to do so will only create false expectations and could cause problems in a relationship. Being open about your weaknesses allows you to find a partner who accepts you as you as you are and is willing to help you grow.

Helps you Avoid Compromising Situations

When you discover and accept your weaknesses, you will be able to avoid dicey situations. For example, if you are a recovering smoker, you might not have the ability to control yourself in places where people smoke freely. Similarly, if you have a short temper, it would be advisable to avoid getting into arguments with your colleagues.

It is very important to be honest about our weaknesses without making excuses or justifying them. Accepting your weaknesses and addressing them can make you even stronger. Having weaknesses only proves one thing-we are humans.
