Making your way to the pinnacle of your field can take years or even decades. And hard work alone doesn’t just cut it.
So what can I do to become exceptional in my field? I asked myself. After reading, researching and talking to successful people on different career paths, I gathered some pointers on being exceptional and here are some of my favorite takeaways.
FIND YOUR PASSION.
It’s very hard to be exceptional at anything if you don’t truly love it, and finding your passion is a lot easier than striving at something you hate.
I think we have gone past the phase where you should be overly concerned with what the crowd thinks about your career choice. I mean, if cooking is your forte, then by all means cook and while you are cooking make loads of money and get popular.
DON’T TRY TO BE PERFECT.
Striving to be great is one thing; striving to be perfect is unrealistic. Instead, focus on ‘improving’. It should be your daily goal to be better than you were yesterday and by so doing, you make yourself relevant in your career.
ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.
In my opinion, there are two problems with people who identify as mediocre: Firstly, they are yet to find their passion, and secondly, they have the wrong mindset or perception about success. You see, it all begins with finding the right questions, instead of looking for the right answers. How do you answer a question if you don’t know the question? So start evaluating your life. Are you happy with it? Are you doing what you love?
LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE.
I have come to the realization that it is easy to develop a convenient routine and settle into it, but risk taking can help you develop and grow. The key is this: Do the unknown, and you will never live a day of mediocrity.
Over the last year, I made a couple changes and I came to this conclusion ‘Once you have extraordinary experiences, you’ll never be ordinary again. Extraordinary experiences also open up extraordinary opportunities.’
IDENTIFY YOUR UNIQUE SKILLS.
The key to not being mediocre is by focusing on discovering and utilizing the gifts you are born with. If you are able to do that, your life will never ever remain the same. Identifying and discovering your unique talents is not as hard as it seems, it can be as simple as writing down all the things you’re good at and what comes to you naturally, and then finding patterns in what you wrote.
FIND RESOURCES THAT HELP YOU STAY MOTIVATED.
Setting targets and goals for yourself is a great first step in the direction of staying motivated, but doing that alone isn’t always enough. You need to find inspiration from movies and books. Find that channel of motivation that suits your personality and daily feed yourself with motivation. How To Excel In Your Career by Stellamaris Obomanu
