Landing your dream job is not a herculean task, neither is it a walk in the park.
It’s work. Hard work. You have to make up your mind from Day 1 that you want this ‘kind of job’ and be ready to pay the price for it.
I’ll show you how you can land your dream job easily. There are 6 basic steps, and each of them is as important as the others.
1. Find your career interest
I’m talking about the ‘skills’ you possess that may be raw, but can be developed. For example, these skills could be speaking, writing, web surfing, selling, design, printing, cooking, baking, dancing, project management, event management or people management.
These are skills that you can develop a career in and most importantly, be fulfilled on the job.
2. Developing your skill set
There is a particular skillset that attracts the right kind of jobs. You need to do your home work. Do your research, check online and find out what skills the leaders in your field possess. For example, I am a marketing and brand professional. The leaders in my field have the following skills: communication, organising/planning, flexibility/multitasking, marketing/sales, interpersonal skills, problem solving, teamwork, etc. Therefore, I knew what skills I needed to develop in preparation for the dream job.
The required skill set varies by industry, so find what it takes and give it all it takes.
3. Solving problems
It’s great to know your career interests, and know the skill sets you need. However, you also need to start solving problems with that skill set.
You can do this by seeking people in your environment who have problems that your skill set can solve. This could be by volunteering to work in a student/non-profit organization or part-time at a business where you can put your skills to work and get results. This is important. You need to build a track record of superb leadership experience and competence. Let your experience have the “wow” effect.
These 3 steps are golden. Find your career interest, develop your skill set and solve problems. There’s no shortcut. You have to stick to the process. In so doing, you’ll create the much needed ‘work’ experience that will land you, the desired dream job!
Landing your dream job is a job in itself. Last week, we discussed finding your career interest, developing your skill set and solving problems. All in a bid to developing that “wow” experience that will land you that dream job!
4. Gaining leadership experience
It’s more important than you think. You may wonder what leadership has to do with your dream job. It has a lot to do with it. Companies are not just looking for an employee who follows the books and thinks hypothetically, “within the box”.
They want you to possess leadership intuition, charisma, effective communication skills and team management skills.
You need to up your game, if you really want that job!
5. Workplace skills/personal grooming
Okay, so we’ve discussed your interest, skills, solving problems and gaining leadership experience. All these are grand.
However, you can’t KEEP your job, even if you LAND it, without workplace skills. You need to know and understand business ethics; and possess good written communication and interpersonal skills, etc. You also need to know how to address people; what is the corporate culture? What are the written and unwritten rules? These skills put you at the top of your game.
As regards personal grooming, a sure way to have a good, long lasting impression on your bosses or potential employers is to dress well! Don’t downplay it. Spend time and money to look good and cultivate good manners.
6. Putting it all together- Sell yourself
Lastly, but definitely not the least, sell yourself!!!
So, you’ve spent time, from a couple of months to 3 years or more developing yourself and you feel well about your experiences. You’ve put together a good CV, and an alluring cover letter. Congratulations!
You may have even gotten yourself an interview invite. Awesome! Now, sell yourself.
You need to put your best foot forward. Now, you are done with school and applying for the top jobs alongside thousands of people. You need to clearly highlight your strengths and tell them in clear terms the VALUE you are bringing to the company.
If you do these things, you’ll definitely land your dream job in no time!
