BEDC orders illegal occupants to relocate

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company on Thursday in Akure ordered owners of property under high tension wires and people transacting business under the wires in Ondo State to relocate immediately.

A statement by the Public Affairs Manager, BEDC, Mr. Oghale Eduziare, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, described such acts as “suicidal.”

It also warned residents not to use fireworks close to power installations during the Yuletide.

It said, “We wish to remind the public that our Right of Way of 5.5 metres on 11/33KV, 12.5 metres on 132KV and 25 metres on 330 KV installations and power lines is still very much in force.”

It stressed that the occupants of buildings under the wires risked being electrocuted in the event of an accident or fault, while the buildings could be burnt.

“Mechanics, petty traders and artisans squatting under and living close to power lines and installations are advised to relocate immediately to avoid untimely death and wanton destruction of property,” it stated.
