Searching For Job? Here is the First Thing You Should Do

These days you need creativity to have an edge in your job search. Today we are bringing to you a very important strategy you need to implement in your job search, SWOT Analysis.

SWOT analysis according to wikipedia is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses/Limitations, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies.

Why do I need all this analysis stuff am not into any business or any venture?
That is where you get it wrong! Your job search is your business! It is your venture! If you have not been seeing it that way, now is the time you change that perspective. In business, you evaluate your strength, weakness, opportunities and threats carefully before taking any decision. Likewise in your career you need to do a SWOT Analysis.

The best way to go about it is to draw a list of your attributes, qualifications, achievements etc. For Example if you are a graduate of accounting, and you are good in Excel and SAGE they could come under your strengths.

Evaluating your Weaknesses: check those characteristics, weak points, habits or qualifications you do not possess that will give other jobseekers and edge over you in any particular job. For Example lack of years of experience.

Opportunities: These are external chances to improve yourself or your chances of getting a job. It could be training availabilty to acquire skills you don’t have or volunteer work opportunity to get experience.

Threats: These are factors that could hinder your job search or ability to get a job. It could be financial challenge or language barrier.
