9,411 Reinstated Zamfara Civil Servants Protest 1 Year and 4 Months Unpaid Salaries

The 9,411 re-engaged Zamfara state civil servants have protested against the government for unpaid salaries running into one year and four months.

They alleged the government was deliberately refusing to pay them even after they were reinstated by the Justice Commissioner Garaba Gajam led committee.

The workers representatives stormed the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat yesterday in Gusau. They said the state governor himself had formally declared their re-instatement in June 2012 giving them the impression that they would be paid in arrears all outstanding entitlements.

One of the aggrieved workers, Abubakar Musa: “We have returned to work as directed by the state governor since June last year and we have been re-verified. We are still waiting for the committee to announce our fate. We neither hear from the government side nor from the committee.”

Another affected worker said he has three wives and 18 dependants with no means to fend for them.

The Committee Chairman Garba Gajam told Daily Trust he was away and could not speak on the telephone until he returned.
