Jubilation as Enugu international airport takes off

There was celebration yesterday at Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu State, as the first commercial passengers’ international flight operation officially began in the South-East state.

The Ethiopian Airline, a Boeing 737 800 with registration number ET-APL carrying 20 passengers, landed at the airport at about 12: 10 pm to meet a receiving crowd of the leaders and peoples of the South East. Among the leaders of the zone that witnessed the event are the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, Governors of the South-East except that of Imo State, Ministers of Finance, Health, Aviation and Power, respectively.

After over one hour celebration inside the remodelled domestic terminal building, the flight later left the airport and took off back to Europe via Ethiopia with 158 passengers, a full capacity that included Governor Sullivan Chime, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, among other dignitaries.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Ethiopian Airlines, Esayas Haylu, expressed happiness that his Airlines was the first to commence international flights to Enugu. Esayas who is also the chief commercial officer of the airlines, greeted the crowd with the traditional Igbo greeting of “Igbo Kwenu” on disembarkment.

He praised the ‘spirit of Igbo people’, saying repeatedly, “I love you, I love you”.

Esayas promised that the Ethiopian Airlines would ensure that it abides by the aviation rules and regulations of Nigeria as long as they fly the Enugu route which is their 76th destination worldwide
