Ogun 2015: Fola Adeola’s campaign posters flood Abeokuta

Barely 48 hours after the official launch of the newly registered political party, All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State, campaign posters of those angling to unseat the incumbent governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun, have surfaced across Abeokuta, the state capital.

Campaign posters of former Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank, Fola Adeola, were yesterday seen in some major streets and strategic location of the state capital.

Adeola was the running mate to former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in the 2011 presidential election under the banner of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Some of the campaign posters and banners were sighted at various strategic locations, including Itoku, Isale Igbein, Ijaiye, Obantoko, Ake, Totoro, Iyana Mortuary and Lafenwa areas of Abeokuta with the banners that bore the APC logo, party slogan and the inscription: “Change 2015: Fola Adeola for Governor”.

The posters and banners announcing Adeola’s preparations to join the governorship race in Ogun State on the platform of the APC however, came barely a month after the chairmen of the defunct ACN in the 20 local government areas of the state endorsed the incumbent governor, Amosun for a second term.

Reacting to the development, however, the state Publicity Secretary of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Sina Oduntan, said that the development was normal and expected in every democratic setting.

Emphasising that the governorship candidate of the APC will emerge through a state congress, Oduntan also stated that everyone had the right to show interest in any elective position in the party.

His words: “The governorship candidate will emerge from the state congress, whether unopposed or not. The recent endorsement of Governor Amosun is different from the consensus of the party which is going to take place.

“There is not going to be imposition of candidates, no consensus without the party convention as stipulated in the party constitution.

“Amosun can be endorsed by anybody; that does not mean he has been made the APC governorship candidate for the coming election. APC will welcome more aspirants.”
