FG Reiterates Commitment To Rural Electrification

The Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, has again reiterated the federal government’s commitment to strengthening the rural electrification programme.

Nebo stated that the National Council on Power would be established before the end of the year primarily to implement the plan.

He explained that the proposed body would be responsible for co-ordination of electricity issues at federal, state and local government area levels, and added that the nation’s rural populace have been short-changed by the lack of access to electricity at the grassroots for too long.

The minister made this disclosure while receiving in audience a delegation of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), led by its President, Engr. Mustapha Shehu.

Commending the tireless efforts of the body in addressing problems of members especially in the emerging scenario in the power sector, Nebo urged engineers to brace-up for the impending boom and astronomical growth of power generation and distribution activities in Nigeria.

He warned that “unless we have well trained engineers there would be influx of foreigners to take over the jobs from Nigerians, we have to strengthen whatever mechanism we have to ensure that Nigerians take over wholly in the power sector.”

He pointed out that as more Independent Power Producers (IPPs) were coming up stream, the country needs to have well trained engineers to man the plants.

On the request of the NSE to have representatives on the boards of the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Nebo noted that the request was right as it would ensure quality inputs from the NSE.

Similarly, on the request for a more vibrant electrical inspectorate department in the ministry, he said more engineers could be trained to fill the gap created by this essential service that was in short supply rather than outsourcing the service to consultants.
