ASUP Calls Off Strike Action; ASUU Still Adamant

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended a strike it embarked upon almost two months ago following the “intervention” of committees on education of both the Senate and House of Representatives.

ASUP which took the decision after an emergency national executive (NEC) meeting in Abuja also gave the government one month within which to start the implementation of an agreement signed by both parties.

President of ASUP Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha told Daily Trust that the union made “substantial inroad” in its demands and suspended the strike due to the intervention of the National Assembly.

“We suspended it out of respect for the education committees of both the Senate and the House of Representatives because they have shown enough goodwill and commitment to addressing the issues,” Asomugha said.

While stating that their demands on the promotion of lecturers had been met, he did not give additional information on whether other demands such as improved infrastructure had been met.

With ASUP calling off its strike, and even after attempts by the federal government to sway the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) failed on Monday, the Minister of Education Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i has expressed hope that the union would also call off its strike soon.

Reacting to reports that the meeting between both parties at the National Assembly deadlocked, Rufa’i said government was still appealing to the union to go back to the classrooms and resume academic work.

The minister told reporters after declaring open a one-day workshop on the African Centres on Excellence Project at the National Universities Commission in Abuja that though both parties were yet to arrive at an acceptable understanding, there was hope the matter would be resolved soon.
